Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. As a young girl the carnival barker father passed away which left Ruth's mother with no choice but to become a cleaner lady and waitress in order to feed the family. Ruth grew in a poor Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She attended school in the area. She left the institution she was in just two years later in order to pursue the profession of acting. Her path to success turned out be strewn with obstacles: in New York, she obtained an opportunity to pose for stills for a magazine about crime However, the stage was not a match for her. After that, she was an hat-checker at an evening club, before deciding to call her quits and relocating to Boston. In Boston, she made a buck in the ushering industry during the in the daytime, while at night she was a part of the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first acting job. Drama studies led her to graduate at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
